The Angel Makers

Music Directing, Composing

Based on a true story, The Angel Makers is a musical about a group of Hungarian women in the 1920s who systematically poison their husbands to escape abusive marriages. The women are led by the town’s midwife, who runs an operation designed to keep them safe and finally earn them their freedom. However, as the women begin to gain power in their town—and the men grow terrified—the midwife starts to question the morality of their methods. Exploring themes of violence, agency, and justice, The Angel Makers uses a folk-rock score to tell this true story of how far women are willing to go to fight for their freedom.

The Angel Makers was first developed through NYU’s Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program. Lorenzo and his collaborator, Amanda Freedman, presented a 45- and 90-minute reading in 2022 and 2023, respectively, for the GMTWP. In August 2023, Lorenzo, Amanda, and collaborators self-produced a staged reading of the piece at the Abrons Arts Center Underground Theatre as part of the @Abrons Series. In March 2024, The Angel Makers was selected as the first musical in a new collaborative initiative between the GMTWP and NYU’s Graduate Acting Program, which worked to put on a 29-hour reading of the piece over the course of one week.

In May 2024, the piece will have an additional staged reading at Western Connecticut State University. Additionally, The Angel Makers was recently selected from more than 400 shows to be part of the SheNYC Arts Festival in August 2024, where it will have its debut staged production in an Off-Broadway Theatre.

“Change My Mind” explores mental health issues through Holly, a young woman assisting a doctor on an experiment that allows participants to change one thing about themselves. On the last day of the trial, Holly must decide which participant is most eligible for the procedure, leaving the audience to consider whether erasing what we dislike about ourselves is the best way forward.
