The Angel Makers

Plot Synopsis
How do we seek justice in an unjust world? Based on a true story, The Angel Makers is a new folk-rock musical about a real group of Hungarian women in the 1920s who secretly band together to poison their abusive husbands and escape their arranged marriages. Led by Suzannah, a mysterious midwife, the women begin an operation designed to keep them safe and finally earn them their freedom. However, as the women’s power grows and the group expands beyond Suzannah’s control, the midwife starts to question their morality. Exploring themes of violence, agency, and justice, The Angel Makers uses a vibrant, electrified score to tell this true story of how far we are willing to go to fight for our freedom.

The Angel Makers was first developed through NYU’s Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program. Lorenzo and his collaborator, Amanda Freedman, presented a 45- and 90-minute reading in 2022 and 2023, respectively, for the GMTWP. In August 2023, Lorenzo, Amanda, and collaborators self-produced a staged reading of the piece at the Abrons Arts Center Underground Theatre as part of the @Abrons Series. In March 2024, The Angel Makers was selected as the first musical in a new collaborative initiative between the GMTWP and NYU’s Graduate Acting Program, which worked to put on a 29-hour reading of the piece over the course of one week.

In May 2024, the piece will have an additional staged reading at Western Connecticut State University. Additionally, The Angel Makers was recently selected from more than 400 shows to be part of the SheNYC Arts Festival in August 2024, where it will have its debut staged production in an Off-Broadway Theatre.

For as long as anyone can remember, the citizens of Snow Falls have been working to perfect their quaint, mountainous, snow-blanketed town. But when a legendary disaster known as The Big Shake upends everything they thought they knew, the townspeople must band together to solve the mystery of their existence, and just maybe break out of the only world they’ve ever known. Originally developed through NYU’s Graduate Musical Theater Writing Program with collaborator Amanda Freedman (Book & Co-Lyrics)

CHANGE MY MIND is a new musical that asks the question: if you could change one fundamental aspect of your personality forever, would you do it; and if so, which one? When a brilliant doctor pioneers a new procedure that allows patients to do just this, her diligent, people-pleasing assistant Holly must lead a group therapy session designed to select who is most deserving of this life-changing opportunity.

Originally developed through the Undergraduate Research Grant with collaborator Theo Janke-Furman (Book & Co-Lyrics)

One morning, August and June’s deadbeat single dad falls off the roof, breaks his neck, and dies. Totally normal, if tragic, high school experience, until he gets up, dusts himself off, and continues life as a ghost. The only problem — Dad can’t leave the house where he died. As the siblings and their grandmother deal with the consequences of Dad’s spectral presence, their lives — and lies — begin to spiral out of control. Ghost Dad is a musical about inheritance, inevitability, grief, and choice. Devised for a cast of 4 actors.

The People of Earth have finally won the war against Nature, and in the fallout have unanimously decided to arrest and punish the monsters collectively known as Disaster. They have been put on trial in front of the whole world to speak for their crimes and defend themselves, and this song cycle is their testimony. The People vs. Disaster explores our complicity and causation of our own undoing, and gives a human face to experiences of mass tragedy.

Eloise is a teenage girl who has been locked inside a beautiful room in a New Orleans estate for as long as she can remember. Her overbearing father monitors her every move, especially how long she spends painting. She confides in her best friend, Bianca, who encourages her to get out of her head and enjoy the world outside, but what Eloise wants to know most of all is how she ended up here in the first place.

Originally developed at NYU’s Graduate Musical Theater Writing Program with collaborator Joey Barreiro (Book & Lyrics)
